Kayoko is a young girl in 1940, just starting first grade. She's a bit of a crybaby, which is no secret to those around her. Her mother is pregnant, and so she looks forward to being a big sister, only partially understanding the responsibility that might bring.
Meanwhile, the war effort is growing, and it`s only the natural thing to do to be patriotic and support the country... Kayoko goes so far as to contribute her favorite dolly, whose materials could help build explosives.
help Who's Left Behind? FAQ
Is Who's Left Behind? based on a true story?
The film presents Kayoko's childhood as an authentic portrait of daily life in Japan as the country slides into World War II, drawn from real wartime experiences. It follows her from starting first grade in 1940 through the escalating air raids, rather than inventing battlefield drama.
Is Who's Left Behind? similar to Grave of the Fireflies?
They're often compared because both are Japanese animated films about children and civilians suffering in World War II. However, Grave of the Fireflies (1988) was made by Studio Ghibli under Isao Takahata, while Who's Left Behind? focuses on a young girl's ordinary prewar and wartime daily life in Tokyo before tragedy strikes.
Does Kayoko die at the end of Who's Left Behind?
Yes — the story builds toward the American air raids on Tokyo in 1945, and the film ends in tragedy with Kayoko's young life cut short. The title refers to the family members left behind to grieve her.
When was Who's Left Behind? released?
It was released in Japan around 1991, making it part of the wave of earnest anti-war animated films from that era. Despite strong word of mouth, it has remained far less available internationally than Ghibli's wartime titles.
