description 198 Ampella Overview
198 Ampella is a numbered minor planet in the main asteroid belt, the region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter where many small bodies orbit the Sun. Henri Perrotin discovered it in 1879, and its name comes from Ampelus, a companion of Dionysus in Greek mythology who was transformed into a grapevine. The object is therefore identified by an astronomical number and a name drawn from classical mythology.
