62 Erato is a numbered main-belt asteroid discovered in 1860 by German astronomers Oskar Lesser and Wilhelm Förster at the Berlin Observatory. It is named for Erato, one of the nine Muses in Greek mythology, traditionally associated with lyric poetry. As an asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter, it belongs to the population of small Solar System bodies used in research on orbital dynamics, asteroid properties, and the history of planetary astronomy.
