(86) Semele is a main-belt asteroid discovered on 4 January 1866 by German astronomer Friedrich Tietjen at the Berlin Observatory. It is a relatively large, dark C-type body in the outer main belt, a class generally associated with carbonaceous material and low reflectivity. The name refers to Semele, a figure in Greek mythology and the mother of Dionysus in classical tradition, as recorded in the [JPL Small-Body Database](https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/sbdb_lookup.html#/?sstr=86).
