A Famosa is a historical Portuguese fortress located in Malacca, Malaysia, originally constructed in 1511 following the Portuguese conquest of the city. It is considered one of the oldest surviving European architectural structures in Southeast Asia. In 1807, the British, who had taken control of Malacca, ordered the demolition of the fortress to prevent it from falling into the hands of rival European powers. Only the gatehouse, known as the Porta de Santiago, survived after intervention by Sir Stamford Raffles.
