A. S. Romer

Alfred Sherwood Romer was a prominent 20th-century American paleontologist who extensively researched and mapped the evolution of vertebrates. He wrote foundational academic texts, including his highly influential textbook "Vertebrate Paleontology," which was used to teach generations of future scientists.

Romer served as a professor at Harvard University and acted as the director of the Museum of Comparative Zoology. During his tenure, he led numerous fossil-hunting expeditions, most notably to the Permian and Triassic geological beds of Texas and Argentina.

"Romer's gap" is a famous term in paleontology referring to a roughly 20-million-year period in the Early Carboniferous era where there is a severe global lack of early tetrapod fossils. Romer identified this mysterious gap in the fossil record, noting how it complicated scientists' understanding of the transition from fish to land-dwelling amphibians.

Romer authored the textbook "Vertebrate Paleontology," which was first published in 1933 and went through three major editions during his lifetime. It became the definitive classification guide and teaching manual for the discipline, cementing his historical influence on the field.
