Abd el-Krim was a Rifian political and military leader who organized resistance to Spanish and French colonial rule in northern Morocco. His forces defeated a much larger Spanish army at the Battle of Annual in 1921, after which he led the Republic of the Rif. Spain and France later coordinated a major campaign against him, and he surrendered to French forces in 1926 before living in exile.
