Joshua Nkomo (1917-1999) was a Zimbabwean nationalist leader who founded the Zimbabwe African People's Union, or ZAPU, in 1961 and opposed white-minority rule in Rhodesia. His movement participated in the political and armed struggle that preceded Zimbabwean independence in 1980. After a period of conflict between ZAPU and Robert Mugabe's government, their parties entered a unity agreement, and Nkomo later served as a vice president of Zimbabwe.
