Achilleion Palace

The Achilleion Palace was built in 1890 specifically for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who was widely known by the nickname Sisi. Following the tragic death of her son, Crown Prince Rudolf, she sought a peaceful, warm retreat on the island of Corfu. The palace served as her personal sanctuary away from the rigid Habsburg court in Vienna.

The palace was named after the Greek hero Achilles because Empress Elisabeth was deeply fascinated by ancient Greek mythology and culture. She saw Achilles as an ideal of masculine beauty and strength, contrasting with her own grief. The gardens and interior are heavily decorated with statues and motifs dedicated to the hero of the Trojan War.

The palace is located on the Greek island of Corfu, situated in the Ionian Sea. It was built on a hilltop in the traditional village of Gastouri, just south of Corfu Town. This specific location was chosen to provide the Empress with breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding green landscape.

The palace is designed in the Neoclassical style, heavily influenced by ancient Greek architecture. It features grand columns, pediments, and terraces that blend harmoniously with the Mediterranean environment. The Italian architect Raffaele Caritto designed the structure to perfectly reflect Elisabeth's philhellenic (love of Greek culture) ideals.
