description Afghan Saur Revolution Overview
The Saur Revolution was a coup in Afghanistan on 27 April 1978, led by the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan, or PDPA. The uprising overthrew President Mohammed Daoud Khan and resulted in his death, bringing a communist government to power. The new regime's reforms, internal factional conflict, and resistance helped produce a widening war, and the Soviet Union intervened militarily in Afghanistan in December 1979.
