description Agostinho Neto Overview
Agostinho Neto (1922-1979) was an Angolan physician, poet, and political leader of the MPLA, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola. He led the movement during the struggle against Portuguese colonial rule and became Angola’s first president when independence was declared on 11 November 1975. He remained president until his death in 1979. His Portuguese-language poetry and political career are both part of modern Angolan cultural and postcolonial history.
