Gracchus Babeuf

description Gracchus Babeuf Overview

Gracchus Babeuf, whose birth name was François-Noël Babeuf, was a French revolutionary, journalist, and political writer during the period after the French Revolution. In 1796 he organized the Conspiracy of Equals, which called for economic equality and challenged the concentration of property and political power. The movement was suppressed by the Directory before it could seize power, and Babeuf was arrested, tried, and executed in 1797. His program is often discussed as an early influence on later communist and egalitarian traditions.
