Al-Hasa Oasis

Al-Hasa Oasis was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 under the official name 'Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape.' The designation recognizes the oasis as a continuously inhabited and cultivated landscape shaped by centuries of irrigation, settlement, and date-palm agriculture. Saudi Arabia nominated the site as an example of how human ingenuity has transformed an arid environment into a sustained agricultural economy.

Al-Hasa is one of the largest oases in the world, encompassing extensive areas of date-palm cultivation fed by natural springs, wells, and canals in eastern Saudi Arabia. It contains millions of date palms—commonly cited in the range of two to three million—making it one of the most productive date-growing regions in the Middle East. The oasis's agricultural output has historically sustained numerous settlements and supported trade routes across the Arabian Peninsula.

Al-Hasa's agriculture has depended on a network of natural artesian springs, wells, and man-made canals that distribute water across the cultivated areas. In the mid-twentieth century, modern pumping and drainage projects were introduced to manage the water supply and address salinity problems caused by rising groundwater tables. The oasis thus represents a layered hydraulic landscape combining traditional spring-fed channels with modern engineering interventions.

Al-Hasa Oasis is located in the Eastern Province (Ash-Sharqiyah) of Saudi Arabia, inland from the Persian Gulf coast and near the city of Hofuf. The oasis sits in a low-lying basin where groundwater from deeper aquifers reaches the surface through natural springs, enabling cultivation in an otherwise arid region. Its location has historically made it a strategic hub connecting the Arabian interior with Gulf trade networks.
