Al-Qatif Oasis

It lies in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province on the coast near the Persian Gulf, in the vicinity of Dammam and Dhahran. The oasis is one of the most historically significant settled areas in the region, contrasting sharply with the surrounding desert.

For centuries it was renowned for its extensive date-palm groves sustained by natural springs and groundwater, as well as pearl diving in the adjacent Gulf waters before the oil era. Its long habitation and position near Gulf trade routes made it a longstanding center of settlement, commerce, and agriculture in eastern Arabia.

The oasis was sustained by abundant springs and groundwater that allowed large-scale date-palm cultivation and permanent settlement in an otherwise arid region. Traditional irrigation distributed this water across dense groves that historically contained hundreds of thousands of palm trees.

The area has been inhabited since antiquity and is often cited as one of the oldest continuously populated places in the Gulf region, appearing in the accounts of ancient geographers. Its oasis agriculture and coastal location underpinned settlement long before oil transformed the Eastern Province in the twentieth century.
