description Alco RS-3 Overview
The Alco RS-3 is a four-axle diesel-electric road-switcher locomotive manufactured by the American Locomotive Company (Alco) beginning in 1950. Rated at 1,600 horsepower from its Alco 244-series engine, it was one of the most commercially successful road-switcher designs of its era, with over 1,400 units produced for North American railroads. The RS-3 was used in mixed freight and passenger service and many units were later rebuilt or re-engined with EMD 645-series power plants.
