The 1942 ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine, with scenery and costumes by Marc Chagall. It was created for Ballet Theatre, the company now known as American Ballet Theatre.

The ballet premiered at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City on 8 September 1942. Chagall's large-scale designs later became important museum objects, including works held by the Aomori Museum of Art.
