Alexander Archipenko

Archipenko was born in Kyiv in 1887, when the city was part of the Russian Empire, and died in New York City in 1964. He later became an American modernist artist active in Europe and the United States.

He translated Cubist ideas into simplified geometric bodies, experimenting with concave spaces, planes, and openings rather than treating sculpture as a solid block. His work was shown in Paris in 1914 alongside artists associated with the developing Cubist movement.

It is a term Archipenko used for dimensional painted reliefs that combine sculptural volume with painted surfaces. Glass on a Table from 1920 is a documented example of this hybrid approach.

Bronze allowed him to preserve simplified human forms while emphasizing movement, balance, and the spaces cut through the body. Museums such as the National Gallery of Art hold bronze examples that show how he reshaped the figure geometrically.
