Alexander Keith Johnston

The Scottish cartographer is famous for producing the 'Physical Atlas' in 1848. This work holds the distinction of being the first comprehensive physical geography atlas ever published in the English language.

He lived from 1804 to 1871, spending much of his life and career in Edinburgh, Scotland. During this time, he established himself as one of the premier geographical draftsmen and mapmakers of the Victorian era.

Johnston's atlas revolutionized the field by translating the complex meteorological, geological, and botanical data of the era into accessible visual maps. His detailed physical maps significantly advanced the study of physical geography in English-speaking schools.

While highly influential, he frequently collaborated with leading scientists of his day to ensure his maps were factually accurate, such as working with Alexander von Humboldt. He also co-founded the prominent Scottish publishing firm W. & A. K. Johnston alongside his brother William.
