Greyfriars Bobby

The statue of Greyfriars Bobby stands outside the entrance to Greyfriars Kirkyard on Candlemaker Row in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is one of Edinburgh's most visited landmarks, and the nearby Greyfriars Bobby pub is named after the famous dog.

Greyfriars Bobby is generally identified as a Skye Terrier, though some historians have questioned this classification and suggested he may have been a Dandie Dinmont Terrier or another similar breed. Regardless of the exact breed, Bobby has become inseparable from the Skye Terrier identity in popular accounts.

Bobby reportedly spent approximately 14 years at the grave of his owner, John Gray, an Edinburgh night watchman known as 'Auld Jock' who died in 1858. Bobby continued to visit the grave until his own death in 1872, making it one of the longest documented cases of animal loyalty.

Bobby is buried just inside the gate of Greyfriars Kirkyard, near his master's grave but just outside the main consecrated burial area. His gravestone remains a popular attraction within the kirkyard, where visitors often leave sticks and flowers as tribute.
