Hachiko

The statue of Hachiko is located at Shibuya Station in Tokyo, Japan, specifically at the Shibuya Station Hachiko Exit. It is one of Tokyo's most popular meeting spots and tourist landmarks, and the surrounding area is commonly associated with the nearby Shibuya Scramble Crossing.

Hachiko was an Akita Inu, a large Japanese dog breed originating from the mountainous northern regions of Japan. The Akita is designated as a Japanese national monument, and Hachiko's story is largely responsible for the breed's international recognition as a symbol of loyalty.

Hachiko's owner was Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor at Tokyo Imperial University. Ueno would commute via Shibuya Station, and Hachiko would greet him there every evening; when Ueno died suddenly in 1925, Hachiko continued to wait at the station for nearly ten years until his own death in 1935.

Hachiko waited at Shibuya Station for approximately nine to ten years following Professor Ueno's death in 1925, continuing until Hachiko's own death in 1935. During this time, he became a national celebrity in Japan, and his story was widely reported in Japanese newspapers, prompting the creation of his statue while he was still alive.
