Alexis Bouvard

description Alexis Bouvard Overview

Alexis Bouvard (1767–1843) was a French astronomer who served as the director of the Paris Observatory. In the early 19th century, he accurately calculated the orbital tables for the planets Jupiter and Saturn. His subsequent attempts to model the orbit of Uranus revealed significant irregularities, which he correctly theorized were caused by the gravitational influence of an unknown celestial body. His meticulous observations directly provided the mathematical foundation that later enabled Urbain Le Verrier to predict the existence of Neptune.
