Algoa Bay

description Algoa Bay Overview

Algoa Bay is a wide inlet on the southeastern coast of South Africa, situated near the city of Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth. The bay contains several small islands, including St. Croix and Bird Island, which serve as important breeding grounds for marine birds such as the African penguin. Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias anchored in the bay in 1488, and it later became an arrival point for British settlers in 1820.

Today, the bay supports significant commercial port operations and aquatic tourism.
