Amazon.com Inc. was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994, originally operating out of his garage in the Seattle area of Washington state. The company was created during the early days of the internet boom with the initial vision of being an online bookstore. It has since grown into the world's largest e-commerce retailer and cloud computing provider.

Amazon Web Services, commonly known as AWS, is Amazon's comprehensive cloud computing platform that launched in 2006. It provides servers, storage, networking, and software to millions of businesses globally on a pay-as-you-go basis. AWS is currently the dominant leader in the cloud computing market and a massive driver of Amazon's overall profitability.

Amazon began its business as a dedicated online bookseller, offering a selection of titles vastly larger than what could fit in a typical brick-and-mortar bookstore. Bezos chose books because they were easy to ship and catalog, allowing him to test the e-commerce model. This initial success provided the foundation for the company to expand into selling electronics, clothing, and eventually everything else.

The current CEO of Amazon is Andy Jassy, who took over the role from founder Jeff Bezos in July 2021. Prior to becoming CEO of the entire company, Jassy was the highly successful head of Amazon Web Services. Bezos transitioned to the role of Executive Chairman of the board.
