Visa's origins trace back to 1958, when Bank of America launched the BankAmericard program in Fresno, California, as one of the first widely available consumer credit cards. The program was reorganized and renamed Visa in 1976 to create a more internationally recognizable brand. Visa Inc. went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2008 in one of the largest IPOs in U.S. history.

Visa operates the payment network infrastructure that connects financial institutions, merchants, and consumers, earning revenue primarily from transaction processing fees. The company does not extend credit or issue cards itself; instead, partner banks issue Visa-branded cards and bear the lending risk. Visa processes trillions of dollars in transactions annually across more than 200 countries and territories.

Visa's primary competitors are Mastercard, which operates on a similar network-partnership model, along with American Express and Discover, which operate more closed-loop networks. Visa and Mastercard together dominate the global payment card network market. In recent years, digital payment platforms and fintech companies have also emerged as competitive forces.

Visa Inc.'s initial public offering in March 2008 was one of the largest IPOs in U.S. history, raising roughly 18 billion dollars. The IPO restructured the company from a cooperative owned by member banks into a publicly traded corporation. Shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol V.
