description Ambracian Gulf Overview
The Ambracian Gulf is a shallow, nearly enclosed gulf of the Ionian Sea in northwestern Greece, connected to the open sea by a narrow channel between Preveza and Actium. Rivers including the Arachthos and Louros feed its wetlands, lagoons, and productive coastal ecosystem. The waters near its entrance were the setting of the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, in which Octavian's forces defeated those of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
