Apis binghami

Apis binghami is a giant honey bee taxon restricted to Sulawesi and nearby Indonesian islands. It thrives in the tropical climates of this specific Southeast Asian region, distinctly separated from other giant bee populations.

The insect was officially named by the entomologist T.D.A. Cockerell in 1906. Cockerell was a prolific researcher of bees who formally classified this distinct giant honey bee species based on its unique morphological characteristics.

Unlike the cavity-nesting Western honey bee (Apis mellifera), Apis binghami is a giant honey bee that builds exposed, single-comb nests. They are also significantly larger in size and exhibit more defensive swarming behaviors typical of giant honey bees.

Because they are restricted to a small range in Indonesia and build exposed nests, they are not used in standard commercial apiculture. Most global commercial honey production relies on managed Apis mellifera or Apis cerana colonies instead.
