You can easily bridge your Home Assistant entities to Apple HomeKit by enabling the HomeKit integration within the Home Assistant software. Once enabled, Home Assistant will generate a QR code that you can scan using the native Home app on your iPhone. This allows Siri and the Apple Home app to control local devices that are otherwise incompatible with HomeKit.

To control your devices remotely via Apple HomeKit, Apple requires an always-on home hub like a HomePod Mini, Apple TV 4K, or a dedicated iPad. However, if you are running Home Assistant Yellow, the hub itself acts as the local server, and you can use the HomeKit integration to expose those devices. You still need an Apple home hub if you want to create complex automations strictly within the Apple Home app.

Apple's software layer is highly secure and emphasizes local control whenever possible, meaning your device data does not have to pass through external servers. HomeKit Secure Video, for instance, processes camera footage locally on a HomePod or Apple TV before encrypting it to iCloud. The Matter standard is designed to unify smart home connectivity, allowing devices to work natively across Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa without proprietary bridges. While Matter reduces the need for complex software workarounds, HomeKit remains Apple's primary software interface for controlling these devices. Using Matter via a Home Assistant hub ensures maximum compatibility with the Apple Home ecosystem.
