Araeosoma alternatum is a species of regular sea urchin in the family Echinothuriidae. It is a deep-water echinoderm with the flexible, soft-test form characteristic of many echinothuriids, whose tests are less rigid than those of typical shallow-water urchins. The species was described by Alexander Emanuel Agassiz in 1879 and belongs to the marine genus Araeosoma.
