Archaeodobenus akamatsui

description Archaeodobenus akamatsui Overview

Archaeodobenus akamatsui is an extinct pinniped in the family Odobenidae, the group that includes the living walrus. It is known from a partial skeleton found in the late Miocene Ichibangawa Formation of Hokkaido, Japan, and lived about 10.0-9.5 million years ago. The species had a small, slender skull and no tusks, and its anatomy helps document the early diversification of walrus relatives.
