Arkhangelsk

Arkhangelsk is located in northwestern Russia and serves as the administrative center of Arkhangelsk Oblast. The city sits on both banks of the Northern Dvina River near its mouth at the White Sea. Its position at the edge of the Arctic region has historically made it a strategic port for maritime access.

Arkhangelsk was Russia's principal seaport for maritime trade with Western Europe from the late 16th century until Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703. During World War II, it served as a critical receiving point for Allied Lend-Lease supplies delivered through the Arctic convoys. Arkhangelsk is also known as Archangel in English, which is a direct anglicization of the Russian name. Both names derive from the Archangel Michael, reflecting the city's historical religious and cultural heritage. Arkhangelsk has a subarctic climate with long, severely cold winters and short, cool summers due to its high latitude near the Arctic Circle.
