Arnarfjörður

Arnarfjörður is a large fjord located in the Westfjords region of northwestern Iceland. It is one of the major inlets in the Westfjords, known for its dramatic scenery and deep waters.

Arnarfjörður is famous in Icelandic folklore as a frequent site for alleged sea monster sightings, particularly a creature known in local tradition as the shore monster or fjord worm. The stories are well-known enough that the nearby village of Bíldudalur houses a Sea Monster Museum dedicated to these legends.

Arnarfjörður is accessible by car via the road network of the Westfjords, though routes can involve narrow gravel roads and challenging driving conditions. The remote Westfjords region sees fewer tourists than Iceland's Ring Road attractions, making it popular with visitors seeking solitude.

The summer months of June through August are the most popular time to visit the Westfjords and Arnarfjörður, when roads are more reliably open and daylight is plentiful. Winter visits are possible but many secondary roads close due to snow and harsh weather conditions.
