The deposits date from the Late Eocene to Early Oligocene, placing the species among the early South American penguins recorded from the region. It was originally named Paraptenodytes andrewsi, and later systematic work treated Arthrodytes as a distinct genus containing this species; the fossils include limb and shoulder bones used to diagnose it.
