description August Smart Lock (Gen 4) Overview
The fourth-generation August Wi-Fi Smart Lock replaces the interior thumb turn of a compatible deadbolt while retaining the exterior lock hardware and existing keys. Built-in Wi-Fi enables remote locking and unlocking through the connected service without a separate August Wi-Fi bridge. Keeping the outside of the door unchanged is the central feature of its retrofit design. This approach can suit renters and homeowners who want app-based access while preserving a familiar physical key.
Rental suitability still depends on the existing lock and permission to alter the interior hardware. It supports established smart home integrations, but compatibility should be checked for the intended platform. Remote access also depends on power, connectivity and the service, rather than being available under every circumstance.
help August Smart Lock (Gen 4) FAQ
Does the August Smart Lock Gen 4 replace the outside of my deadbolt?
No. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock installs on the inside of the door and keeps the exterior deadbolt hardware in place, so your existing key still works.
Does the Gen 4 August lock need the August Connect bridge?
No. The fourth-generation August Wi-Fi Smart Lock has Wi-Fi built in, which is the main change from older models that needed a separate Connect bridge for remote access.
What is DoorSense on the August Smart Lock?
DoorSense is August's sensor system for detecting whether the door is open or closed. That matters because a smart lock can report itself as locked even when the door is physically ajar unless it has a door-position sensor.
Which smart home platforms work with the August Gen 4 lock?
The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock works with major ecosystems such as Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. It is also managed through the August app for guest access, auto-lock, and activity history.
