Australian War Memorial

Each evening at closing time, the memorial holds a Last Post ceremony in the Commemorative Area, where the bugle call is sounded and the story of one individual from the Roll of Honour is shared. The ceremony is free to attend and has been held every evening since 2013.

General admission to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra is free, though donations are encouraged and timed-entry tickets are required during busy periods. Some special temporary exhibitions and events may have separate booking requirements.

The concept is credited to Charles Bean, Australia's official World War I correspondent and later official historian, who envisioned a national memorial that would also serve as a museum and archive. The enabling legislation was passed in 1925, and the building opened to the public in 1941.

The complex combines a shrine, a museum, and an extensive archive with large galleries covering conflicts from the colonial era through modern peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Highlights include aircraft and large military hardware displayed in Anzac Hall and the sombre Hall of Memory featuring one of the largest mosaics in the world.
