Autobahn

The full version of 'Autobahn' takes up the entire first side of the original vinyl LP, running approximately 22 minutes. A drastically edited single version was cut down to about three minutes and became Kraftwerk's breakthrough hit, reportedly reaching the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in 1975.

Kraftwerk used a combination of electronic instruments including the Minimoog synthesizer, the EMS Synthi AKS, and early drum machines alongside traditional instruments like flute and guitar. The album was produced with Konrad 'Conny' Plank at his studio near Cologne, and his production approach was critical to the clean, layered sound that defined the record.

Autobahn established the 'motorik' rhythmic pattern—a steady, repetitive 4/4 beat evoking highway driving—that became foundational to krautrock and later influenced synthwave, retrowave, and techno. Artists from David Bowie during his Berlin period to modern electronic producers cite the album's fusion of melody with mechanical repetition as a major inspiration.

Kraftwerk released remastered versions of their catalog—collectively known as 'The Catalogue'—around 2009, with cleaner audio and slightly altered mixes compared to the original vinyl pressings. Some longtime listeners note that the remasters sound brighter and more clinical but lose some of the analog warmth and tape saturation characteristic of the original Conny Plank productions.
