The Awash is an endorheic river in Ethiopia roughly 1,200 kilometres long that drains the central highlands and terminates in the saline Lake Abbe on the Djibouti border without reaching the sea. Its valley runs through the Main Ethiopian Rift and Afar Depression, regions with extensive paleoanthropological sites including Hadar, where the Australopithecus afarensis specimen "Lucy" was recovered in 1974.
