Bamburgh Castle

Yes, Bamburgh stands on the site of Bebbanburg, an Anglo-Saxon royal stronghold linked to the kingdom of Northumbria. Its coastal position made it one of the most important power centers in early medieval northern England.

The Last Kingdom uses the name Bebbanburg for Uhtred's ancestral home, which is based on the historical site of Bamburgh. The modern castle is in Northumberland, overlooking the North Sea, although the TV series used multiple filming locations.

Industrialist William Armstrong bought Bamburgh Castle in the 1890s and restored much of it. His work helped create the large Victorian-era castle visitors see today on top of the older fortress site.

The castle overlooks Bamburgh Beach and the Northumberland coast, with views toward the Farne Islands on clear days. The village also has connections to Grace Darling, the 19th-century heroine associated with the 1838 Forfarshire rescue.
