Bamiyan Buddhas

description Bamiyan Buddhas Overview

The Bamiyan Buddhas were two monumental standing Buddha statues carved into the sandstone cliffs of the Bamyan Valley in central Afghanistan during the sixth century CE, when the region served as a Buddhist religious center along trade routes. The larger statue measured approximately fifty-five meters tall, making it one of the tallest standing Buddha figures in the world. In March 2001 the Taliban leadership ordered their destruction with explosives after declaring them idols, an act that drew international condemnation. The niches remain visible at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
