Ben, in the World is a 2000 novel by Doris Lessing and a sequel to The Fifth Child. It follows Ben Lovatt after he leaves his family and moves through an unfamiliar social world in which other people often treat him as a problem, an object of curiosity, or a source of exploitation. The novel continues Lessing's examination of exclusion, family responsibility, and the way society responds to people who do not fit its expectations.
