description Benin Overview
Benin is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, independent from France in 1960 and known as Dahomey until it was renamed in 1975. Its official capital is Porto-Novo, though the seat of government is the port city of Cotonou. It is the historic heartland of the Kingdom of Dahomey, with its famed all-female soldiers, and of the Vodun religion still widely practised today. Coastal towns such as Ouidah were central to the Atlantic slave trade and now preserve memorial sites, while northern parks like Pendjari protect savanna wildlife.
