description Berlin Palace Overview
The Berlin Palace, also known as the Berlin City Palace, is a reconstructed building located on Museum Island in central Berlin, Germany. Originally a royal residence of the House of Hohenzollern, the palace was heavily damaged during World War II and later demolished by the East German government. Following German reunification, the exterior was rebuilt with a Baroque facade while the interior was designed as a modern museum space. The structure now serves as the home of the Humboldt Forum, a prominent cultural and anthropological museum complex.
help Berlin Palace FAQ
What is inside the rebuilt Berlin Palace today?
The reconstructed palace now houses the Humboldt Forum, a cultural venue that opened in December 2020. Its museums include the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art, displaying Berlin's non-European collections.
Why was the original Berlin Palace demolished?
The Hohenzollern royal residence was heavily damaged in World War II, and in 1950 East German authorities blew up the remaining structure. The GDR later built its Palast der Republik on the site, which itself was demolished in the late 2000s to allow the palace reconstruction.
Is the reconstructed Berlin Palace an exact copy of the original?
Not entirely. Three of the outer Baroque facades were faithfully reconstructed, while the interiors and one modern side are new construction for the Humboldt Forum. The ornate facade elements were funded in part by more than 100 million euros in private donations.
