Bhaja Chaitya Stupa

The Bhaja Caves are located near Lonavala in Maharashtra, India, along the ancient trade routes of the Western Ghats. The chaitya stupa in question is specifically housed in Cave 12, which is the main prayer hall of the complex.

The Bhaja Caves date to approximately the 2nd century BCE, placing them in the Hinayana phase of Indian rock-cut architecture. This makes the Bhaja chaitya hall one of the earliest surviving examples of its kind in India, predating the more elaborate Karle Caves nearby.

A chaitya hall is a Buddhist congregational prayer space with a stupa at its apse end, designed for circumambulation. The Bhaja chaitya is simpler and more austere than later examples like Karle, with plain octagonal pillars and no decorative sculpture on the columns, reflecting the early phase of rock-cut Buddhist architecture.

The hall features a vaulted barrel ceiling carved to imitate contemporary wooden architecture, with a stupa at the far end for worship. Remarkably, some original wooden structural elements, including ceiling ribs, have survived for over two millennia inside the cave, making Bhaja a rare site preserving ancient wooden construction techniques.
