The black-bellied salamander (Desmognathus quadramaculatus) is a large aquatic salamander native to the southern Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States, ranging from Virginia to Georgia. It reaches total lengths of around 12 to 17 centimetres and is one of the largest members of the genus Desmognathus. The species inhabits cold, fast-flowing mountain streams and seepages, where larvae develop in water and adults remain highly aquatic, feeding on invertebrates and smaller salamanders.
