Dragonhunter

The Dragonhunter (scientifically named Hagenius brevistylus) is a massive, highly specialized species of dragonfly native to North America. It is the sole living member of its taxonomic genus, Hagenius. The insect earns its common name from its rare, specialized predatory behavior of actively hunting and consuming other species of dragonflies.

The Dragonhunter is the largest dragonfly species in Canada and among the largest in North America. They boast an impressive wingspan that can reach up to 4.5 inches (114 millimeters) and a heavy, muscular body. Their massive size and powerful flight muscles are what allow them to overpower other large predatory insects.

As their name implies, they are voracious apex predators that primarily feed on other species of dragonflies. They will aggressively hunt large insects, including darners, swallowtails, and even other predatory wasps. They catch their prey mid-air, carrying their victims to a nearby tree branch to consume them.

Dragonhunters are typically found in the eastern half of North America, ranging from the Canadian provinces down to Florida and Texas. They exclusively inhabit heavily wooded areas near clean, fast-flowing streams and small rivers. Their aquatic nymphs require these high-oxygen streams to develop properly before maturing into adults.
