The Black Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus humator) is one of the largest burying beetle species found in Europe, reaching up to 25 millimeters in length. Like other burying beetles in the family Silphidae, it locates small vertebrate carcasses using chemoreceptors on its antennae and buries them as a food source for its larvae. N. humator is distinguished by its entirely black coloration, including its antennae, unlike many related species which have orange markings.
