description Blue Whale Overview
The blue whale is the largest animal known to have lived, with large individuals reaching around 30 meters and approximately 180 tonnes. Despite this size, its main food is tiny krill. As a baleen whale, it takes water and prey into its mouth, then pushes the water through bristlelike plates that retain food. Its long body and mottled blue-gray skin distinguish it from other large whales.
Blue whales occur across the major oceans, with movements linked to feeding and breeding conditions. Commercial whaling in the twentieth century severely depleted their populations, and the species remains endangered despite international protection. Recovery has not restored their former abundance. For readers interested in marine wildlife, the contrast between immense body size and dependence on small crustaceans makes this whale particularly useful for understanding ocean food webs.
help Blue Whale FAQ
What is the largest animal ever recorded on Earth?
The blue whale holds the record as the largest animal ever known to have existed, reaching lengths of up to 30 meters and weighing approximately 180 tonnes. Their massive tongue alone can weigh as much as an elephant.
