Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back

The documentary captures Bob Dylan's 1965 concert tour throughout the United Kingdom. It chronicles the final moments of his purely acoustic folk era before he controversially transitioned to electric rock music later that same year.

The film was directed by D.A. Pennebaker, a pioneer of the direct cinema and cinéma vérité documentary styles. Pennebaker shot the film using handheld 16mm cameras to capture intimate, fly-on-the-wall footage of Dylan and his entourage.

The cue card sequence actually serves as the promotional music video for Dylan's song 'Subterranean Homesick Blues.' In the scene, Dylan stands in an alleyway behind London's Savoy Hotel dropping cue cards that are synchronized to the song's lyrics.

Folk singer Donovan appears in a notable scene where he plays a song for Dylan in a hotel room. Dylan then takes the acoustic guitar and plays 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue,' seemingly upstaging Donovan in real-time on camera.
