Boeing-Airbus rivalry

The commercial aircraft duopoly took shape in the 1970s following the introduction of the Airbus A300. Airbus was specifically formed as a European consortium to break the dominance that American manufacturers like Boeing held over the global jetliner market.

Boeing is an American company, historically headquartered in Seattle before moving its corporate offices to Arlington, Virginia. Airbus is a European multinational aerospace corporation headquartered in Blagnac, just outside of Toulouse, France.

Boeing and Airbus hold a near-total monopoly over the manufacturing of large commercial passenger jets. The immense financial barriers, strict safety regulations, and technological complexity required to build wide-body and narrow-body airliners prevent other companies from successfully entering the market.

The two companies constantly compete by offering advanced, fuel-efficient aircraft families, such as the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. They aggressively compete for multi-billion dollar contracts at major industry events like the Paris Air Show to secure dominance in global jetliner orders.
