Partially — his vocals were blended with isolated Freddie Mercury recordings and those of Marc Martel, a Canadian singer famous for sounding uncannily like Mercury. Malek also worked with a movement coach and wore a prosthetic overbite to capture Mercury's stage presence.

It won four Academy Awards at the 2019 ceremony, more than any other film that night: Best Actor for Rami Malek, Film Editing, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. It was also a box-office phenomenon, grossing over $900 million worldwide.

Singer was terminated in December 2017 after repeated absences from set and clashes with the cast, halting production. Dexter Fletcher came in to finish the film, though Singer retained the sole directing credit.

The 1985 Wembley set was painstakingly recreated on a replica stage built at Bovingdon Airfield in England, down to the setlist and costumes, and it's widely considered the film's high point. The movie does take timeline liberties, though — most notably implying Freddie knew his HIV diagnosis before Live Aid, when bandmates say he was diagnosed a couple of years later.
