Bougainvillea spectabilis

Bougainvillea spectabilis is a vigorous woody climber native to the tropical regions of Brazil. It thrives in warm climates and has become a popular ornamental plant in gardens worldwide.

The plant was one of the first bougainvilleas introduced to Europe in the late 18th century. It was discovered and brought back during the famous global expedition led by French admiral Louis Antoine de Bougainville.

The vibrant "flowers" of the plant are actually modified leaves called bracts, which surround the small, tubular, true white flowers inside. These papery bracts can range in color from bright magenta to purple and red.

In its native Brazilian habitat, it grows as a vigorous, thorny, woody vine that scrambles over other vegetation. It uses its sharp thorns to latch onto supports, allowing it to reach sunlight in dense forest canopies.
